Joe Lycett: Summer Exhibitionist

Art-loving comedian Joe Lycett joins artists hoping to make it onto the walls of the RA Summer Exhibition 2022, the world’s largest open-submission art contest.

Grid

A ritual of grids, reflections and chasms; a complete state of entropy; a space that devours itself; a vertigo that destroys the gravity of the Earth; a trap that captures us inside the voids of the screen of light: «That blank arena wherein converge at once the hundred spaces» (Hollis Frampton).

ENTRANCE

This is an installation documentary created in 2015. The quiet process of making boxes indoors reflects the author's patience and caution, the narration when the screen is black reflects the author's familiarity and confidence in what he wants to express, and the dodging perspective and trembling picture when facing the crowd outdoors reflect the photographer's cramped and alienated. A lot of things happened after 2015, and the film was re-edited. The current version has almost used the best materials of that year.

Kontroll

A subway enforcement officer working in the oppressively gray Budapest metro gets a chance at love — but first he needs to find out why passengers are jumping — or being pushed — to their deaths onto the tracks.

The Salt of the Earth

During the last forty years, the photographer Sebastião Salgado has been travelling through the continents, in the footsteps of an ever-changing humanity. He has witnessed the major events of our recent history: international conflicts, starvations and exodus… He is now embarking on the discovery of pristine territories, of the wild fauna and flora, of grandiose landscapes: a huge photographic project which is a tribute to the planet's beauty. Salgado's life and work are revealed to us by his son, Juliano, who went with him during his last journeys, and by Wim Wenders, a photographer himself.

Kifouine, un tour du monde en solidaire

"Three friends, a small sailboat, forty-five young adults with cerebral palsy (CP)." At the age of twenty-seven, Brice, Eric, and Hervé, three friends who met at business school, set off on a round-the-world sailing trip aboard Kifouine, a small eight-meter sailboat not really designed for long-distance sailing. It was an extraordinary human adventure that lasted three years, which they shared with forty-five young adults with cerebral palsy from the PASSErAILE center in the Paris region, who also dreamed of setting sail. Every day, the sailors kept them updated on their journey via their online stories. But above all, they invited them to join them in small groups to experience five major stops around the world with them. This is their travel journal...

Return of the Fireflies

In Bali, artist Daan Roosegaarde and local Balinese spent three years breeding a Firefly Garden where light returns at night. This love story of people and nature flickers with courtship, longing, and reunion.

How do we influence the world around us? A fluid analysis tool ordinarily used in the laboratory offers new interpretations of human interaction and provides surprising insights about our place in the world.

Made as part of the Winnipeg Film Group's "Super 8 Special" film incubator. This picture was captured on super 8 film, drip dyed with a mixture of india ink and water collected from Lake Winnipeg, then digitized and captured on VHS.

Through an imagined dialogue with Jean Paul Riopelle, this experimental film updates the painter's legacy by seeking to build bridges with today's generation. Part homage, part self-portrait, this short film is above all an intimate reflection on the courage to be oneself.

Amie Siegel’s film installations often reveal the hidden narratives behind architecture and design, investigating the mechanisms by which objects, materials, and spaces accrue meaning and value. The Architects examines the processes of architectural creation, using the artist’s signature slow, parallel tracking shots to offer insight into the inner workings of multiple architecture firms, slicing through them laterally like an architect’s section plan... On the Bride’s Side

A Palestinian poet and an Italian journalist meet five Palestinians and Syrians in Milan who entered Europe via the Italian island of Lampedusa after fleeing the war in Syria. They decide to help them complete their journey to Sweden, and hopefully avoid getting themselves arrested as traffickers, by faking a wedding. With a Palestinian friend dressed up as the bride and a dozen or so Italian and Syrian friends as wedding guests, they cross halfway over Europe on a four-day journey of three thousand kilometres.
