Douglas Gordon sings the best of Lou Reed & The Velvet Underground (For Bas Jan Ader)

In the present work, the artists appears lying on his back, his eyes mostly closed, dreamingly listening to a walkman that plays, a recording of 'The Best of Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground'. The artist can hear the music through his earphones, but as viewers we are only privy to the sound of his voice that whispers the melody. As we listen to the hypnotic interpretion of the familiar songs - as emblematic for pop music history as 'Psycho' is for film - we are forced to mentally 'reconstruct' the remaining orchestration, instrumentation and vocals. We must attempt to reassemble something we already know to be a fact by negotiating the sticky mess of interpretation, meaning, and memory.

Quem

The complex interaction between the different facets of an individual in conflict, where multiple personalities compete for dominance while the true identity seeks to assert itself. The work invites the viewer to reflect on the fragmentation of identity and the yearning for inner reconciliation.

Tutu Academy

At Tutu Academy, where tutus are the uniform, students of all characters (geeks to goths) express themselves through ballet—and bizarro hair. One odd day, a UFO lands and an alien enters the classroom. Eager to connect with the visitor who doesn’t speak earthly language, the teacher starts a dance conversation—followed by the entire class. At first, the alien struggles to learn the artful language, until he’s gifted a magical tutu. With fresh confidence, the green-hued stranger joyfully joins the dancing crew. But just as the bond deepens, the alien must return to his homeland. With bittersweet farewells, the UFO departs—donning a tutu too. On his planet, a stark contrast to Tutu Academy’s vibrant vibe, the alien proudly presents tutus to his commanders, where they dance in celebration of the newfound connection with Earth.

Gluttony

Gluttony is a haunting exploration of the devouring mother archetype, embodied by two twin dancers locked in an eternal cycle of consumption and dependency. Through visceral contemporary movement, the film unravels the tension between nourishment and destruction, love and suffocation. Inspired by the Ouroboros, the choreography unfolds in a labyrinthine setting, where the daughter desperately seeks escape, only to find herself inevitably drawn back. The visual language plays with the abject—orange gelatin evoking amniotic fluid, fractured reflections, and tactile imagery that blurs the boundaries between bodies. It is not just about gluttony; it is about inheritance, identity, and the inescapable hunger for connection.

Drum Dance

An old factory, a giant of iron and concrete, bears the scars of time. Its empty spaces whisper the silence of a vanished era. A man appears, at first motionless and surrounded by shadows. He begins to dance, seeking light, sun and freedom. The rhythm of the drums accompanies him, exploding in the final phase.

Samskara

An abstracted film to contribute to the fight against racism. As an immigrant, I have experienced it first hand. This film showcases the beauty and richness of humanity. Nine cultures unite to make art. The dancers will tell you what brings humanity together. We must come together.

Chinese Characters

Best known for his work in video, Richard Fung has made the politics of gender, ethnicity, and sexual orientation his central focus. Chinese Characters (1986) examines the ambiguous relationship of gay Asian men with white gay porn.

A 19-minute short film featuring the six performances of the Japanese performance art group Grinder-Man. Only released on VHS.

The Shining: Forwards and Backwards

An experimental film comprised of Stanley Kubrick's THE SHINING played forwards and backwards at the same time on the same screen, creating bizarre juxtapositions and startling synchronicities.

Faces of Emmanuelle

An exploration of the VHS medium and the subterranean trash which thrived in it. Using source material from Emmanuelle 6, this DVD-R/VHS further blurs the line between low and high art. Beautiful cinematography coupled with smut. Strategic pauses and tracking errors guides the viewer to discover the true depth and sadness of the seemingly one-dimensional Emmanuelle. Soaring arpeggio synths and pulsating rhythms by Rob Feulner. The utter destruction of arguably the most beautiful film never seen, lost and forgotten on the shelf of your local video store, behind the cowboy doors or dangling beads. Written off as pornography by most, written off as too soft by creeps. This is the plight of Emmanuelle.

Erosion

Erosion alludes to the process of shaping through which bodies are traversed. Time, as an agent of molding and unmolding human relationships, deposits in each encounter supported breaths, creating passages and possibilities of cracks for access to the other, in an attempt to avoid calcification.
